How do I install an electrical outlet next to a switch?
I have a light on a wall switch with three feet below it. I added the double-gang box and an outlet, but evidently do not have it wired correctly. There are three wires coming to the box: black, white and copper (ground). I connected the cables to the line side of a GFCI receptacle, then run new wiring from the load side of the receptacle for change. Oops! When nothing is plugged into the outlet, light switch and work as expected. However, nothing in the output connection (such as Christmas lights) makes light on the wall to enter vaguely, and the Christmas lights are also its light, even more, turning the light switch on the wall causes that occur in full (as expected) and the Christmas lights all around. Any idea what went wrong? I feel that there should be something either in the spliced light or gearboxes. Thanks, Kevin
both are wrong. If you only have three wires coming to the box (light switch) then that means the supply (POWER) will light the cables first and then go to the light switch to complete the circuit. You need to have the offer in the light box in order to connect siwtch an outlet. If you were to do this, then you would have 6 cables in the box. a black and white copper supply and Blac white and copper to go to your light. If that were the case then just splice into the power outlet of the source using wire nuts. But I agree that if you do not know what it is doing its dangerous to mess with electrical as you can burn your house down and not be covered
