Noam Chomsky said it best “to end terrorism, you must stop participating in it”.
The US has used terrorism, either directly or indirectly for many decades to fullfill the needs that you describe. Have we gone “Roman”? I don’t know….at least the romans took some kind of culture with them, when they were the thugs. Albeit it was “romanised” Greek culture.

I don’t know about the oil thing, but we could do it just for fun. I mean, since we have them, we might as well get some entertainment out of the deal. Airburst nukes would make the ultimate fireworks show, I think.

You sound like a bumper sticker writer. You forget that it is not about oil capacity, right now it is about oil production, Carter and his cronies helped to destroy our ability to produce enough oil. If we built some more processing plants our problems would be reduced.
