Solar energy against nuclear power - cost efficiency, no consideration?
I recently read that solar energy can generate for 8-12cUS/kWh. Does this make for a competitive production cost, you can given the cost of retail electricity? If environmental costs be taken into account at current prices, as some suggest that inevitably must be, would then be competative? If lack of fissile material for products to be taken into consideration, given the current series of wars (against terrorism, against drugs, under carpets, etc.)?
I heard recently that solar panels pay for themselves in 8 years. And with rising fuel costs can be paid in 4 years. They are guaranteed for 10 years and life expectancy is about 25-30 years. If the government subsidizes the cost and more manufacturers began producing them would lower costs. Also can be placed on the roof of any person and does not pollute and do not represent danger (unlike nuclear). I think turbines solar and wind power installed in family homes is the way forward.
