Do you know how energy efficient your furnace is? Most owners do not know. Efficiency of a central heating furnace is measured in terms fuel efficiency of use annually (AFUE). The U.S. the Federal Trade Commission forces manufacturers of new furnaces or boilers to display their AFUE in their product so that consumers can compare heating efficiencies of various models.
AFUE expresses how efficient the appliance is in the energy of its fuel during a typical year. To be more precise, AFUE is the ratio of heat output of the furnace compared to the total energy consumed by a furnace. An AFUE of 90% means that 90% of energy in the fuel becomes heat for the home and the other 10% escapes up the chimney and elsewhere. AFUE does not include heat losses from ducts or piping system, which can be as much as 35% of energy to the output of the furnace when ducts are located in the attic.
You can figure the effectiveness of the system only by its AFUE but also by their characteristics and the type of equipment. For example, the elderly, the systems low efficiency heating have a continuous pilot light, heat exchangers, heavy and an AFUE of about 68% -72%. Newer, high efficiency characteristic heating systems for flue gas condensation in a second heat exchanger for extra efficiency, and with sealed combustion chambers, reach 90% -97% AFUE.
Do not worry, do not stick with old money pit oven forever. Ovens can be strengthened to increase efficiency. Updates improve both safety and effectiveness of otherwise sound, older systems. The costs of modernization must be weighed carefully the cost of a new furnace, especially if the substitution is likely that within a few years or if you want to change to a different system for other reasons, such as adding air conditioning or go all the gas energy electric.
Vintage model furnaces with a continuous pilot can be equipped with intermittent ignition devices. These are difficult to install, however, and should only be installed by certified professionals. Costing about $ 250, which are characterized by having a payback period of less than 10 years. Although intermittently ignition devices can save some fuel costs, which are not always profitable when installed on older computers. Turning off the pilot light of a furnace in spring and turning it on again in the fall can typically save as much money as you would with one of these devices. Not all furnaces of continuous light pilot can accommodate this solution, however, so check with your furnace or heating contractor manual first.
